Storytime: When I Grow Up...

This storytime was for a preschool-aged group at my library.

Read Aloud Books

How to Get a Job...by Me, the BossWritten by Sally Lloyd-Jones, illustrated by Sue Heap

This here boss has all the tips and tricks you need to get a job, all the way from deciding what you want to do to the interview process. It is long and somewhat involved, and I obviously thought it was much more hilarious than any of the kids. They tuned out of it pretty fast.

This Is a MooseWritten by Richard T. Morris, illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld

A documentary on moose go awry when the star of the show would rather be an astronaut. Yay, I finally got to use this book in storytime! I love it. And the kids loved it, too, though they may have been laughing more at my variety of voices than the story itself (it is rather fun to read aloud).

Kitten Red, Yellow, BlueWritten and illustrated by Peter Catalanotto

When Sophia has 16 kittens, it's up to her owner to find them new homes. Luckily, she has just the right idea. It's adorable, and goes through a variety of fine jobs. I think the kids liked it.

Songs and Rhymes

Song: Drive the Fire Truck
(we use the version on Songs For Wiggleworms)
Hurry, hurry drive the fire truck
Hurry, hurry drive the fire truck
Ding ding ding ding!

Hurry, hurry put the ladder up…
Hurry, hurry put the fire out…
Hurry, hurry drive the fire truck…

The wheels on the bus go round and round
round and round, round and round.
The wheels on the bus go round and round,
all through the town!
(...plus however many verses you're up for)

Games and Activities

Felt: Fireman & Astronaut

The astronaut from my space storytime and my new fireman need some help getting ready for their jobs! The kids help me decide what each of these guys should put on next and we sing this song (to the tune of "If You're Happy and You Know It")

If you're going to the moon, wear your helmet.
If you're going to the moon, wear your helmet.
If you're going to the moon, then this is what you've got to do!
If you're going to the moon, wear your helmet.

-or-

If you're going to fight a fire, wear your helmet.
If you're going to fight a fire, wear your helmet.
If you're going to fight a fire, then this is what you've got to do!
If you're going to fight a fire, wear your helmet.

And the same thing for their gloves and boots. And then ta-da!

My files for these fine gentlemen are as follows:

Craft: When I grow up...

Pretty simple, but the kids got to color what they want to be when they grow up! Idea came from Storytime Katie.

I also put out some glitter glue so they kids could have a bit more fun. Here's the file I created for the project:
